"May Flowers" ©2018 Leada Wood

With the warmer weather and flowers blooming my thoughts have turned toward spring. Still using a square format I incorporated bright colors working with green, yellows and orange. Nothing says spring like sunflowers and butterflies! Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Easter! By Leada Wood, Texas Artist

©Leada Wood

I know Easter is really not about the Easter bunny but I just couldn't resist using this painting to wish you a happy Easter. The colors remind me of all those colorful eggs that will be found tomorrow. I enjoyed dyeing eggs with my kids and grandkids except that the dye usually had to wear off. We looked so cute in our Easter bonnets and colorful hands! Folks don't get as dressed up as they once did for church on Easter Sunday. When I was a girl I looked forward to getting a new dress, socks, shoes, hat and gloves for the occasion. That was a long time ago and things are different now. In my opinion I think we may be getting a little too casual about lots of things. Maybe it is time for a change. Happy Easter!

Happy Thanksgiving! by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. Thanksgiving isn't just a day, it is how we should live our lives every day. Gratitude can transform ordinary days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change opportunities into blessings. There is always something to be grateful for, all we have to do is open our eyes and heart and look for it.

"In all things give thanks." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

"Holi Elephant" By Leada Wood, Texas Artist

I have been watching a series called Indian Summer and the beginning of every show begins with colored powders being tossed into the air. Indians celebrate  a Holi festival throwing perfumed, colored powder into the air and everyone and anything is fair game. The powders signify the coming of spring and the new colors it brings to nature.

All the vivid colors excites my senses and of course I had to try it with paint! Yes there has been some paint slinging going on in the studio lately and maybe more to come.

In my minds eye I could see an elephant emerging through the brilliant colors so that is what I portrayed onto the canvas.  My mom collected elephants and I have a fond attachment to the amusing creatures myself. In the Hindu way of thought, the elephant symbolizes fortune, protection and is a blessing upon all new projects. They are also known for their strength, honor, stability and focus on family.  Happy Mother's Day!

"Yellow Rose of Texas" by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

The Yellow Rose of Texas is what I call prickly pear cactus blooms. They are blooming now and are gorgeous! Prickly Pear are plentiful in West Texas along with different varieties of cactus.

There has been medical interest in the plant lately and studies show the pectin contained in the pulp lowers the levels of bad cholesterol. Another study found that the fibrous pectin in the fruit and pads may lower diabetics need for insulin. I guess the saying let food be your medicine rings true! From Prickly Pear Margaritas to Prickly Pear jelly to grilled Nopales, the humble cactus offers it fruit as well as beauty.

"The Yellow Rose of Texas" is a traditional folk song in the southwest. The original version was associated with the legend of how an indentured servant named Emily West, unwittingly aided the Texans in winning the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle in the War of Independence from Mexico.

I hope you enjoyed learning a little about the Prickly Pear, or as I like to call it The Yellow Rose of Texas. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank You Lubbock! by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

First Friday Art Trails are always such an event in Lubbock. These people know how to support the Arts! The weather was chilly and still the art lovers came in waves. It makes me grateful to be able to participate in this amazing celebration of the Arts. Lots of lovely galleries line the Arts District with Trolleys and Buses to take you around. I throughly enjoyed myself and plan to participate every chance I get.

Took a moment while it wasn't so busy to snap a photo. I am so happy to be a member of the Art League of West Texas Foundation such an active and fun group!

Another shot of The Clay House on FFAT adjacent to the Louise Underwood Center For The Arts.

Yours truly thanking you from the bottom of my heart for a night to remember!

Sugar Skulls, Mixed Media, by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Leada Wood, Watercolor, Mixed Media, Collage

"Sugar Skulls" ©Leada Wood 2015

These are post cards that I made for IHannas 2015 Postcard Swap. Artist from all over the world are creating little works of art and sending them in the mail. It is so exciting to get 10 little works of art in the mail for your very own! I don't know about you but bills and junk mail are just no comparison to ART MAIL!

I started my backgrounds using my Gelli plate. As you can see my painting board underneath is getting nearly ready to be framed...just a few more layers of paint!

This stamp I carved started the whole Sugar Skull series as I explored various ways to make them fun and festive.

This is what one looked like with the Gelli background and the sugar skull stamped with white paint, before all the glitter and fun began.

Here in Texas there is a large number of Hispanic people and they have a tradition from October 31st to November 2nd to honor their loved ones who have passed over. They call it "Dia de Los Muertos" or Day Of The Dead, to others it is called All Souls Day or All Saints Day. It is really a celebration of life and the ancestors who have preceded us. The real celebrating is in Mexico where they have fiestas and parties and can spend a months salary on the festivities.

Here he is "King Of The Sugar Skulls" in his final festive finery!

I thought since the postcard swap was during this time of year, it would be fun to share the spirit of life celebration with my new friends. I sure hope they like their Sugar Skulls!

Thanks Hanna for hosting another wonderful exchange! Be sure to check out her blog and look at all the amazing cards. Www.iHanna.nu

30 Paintings In 30 Days by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Leada Wood, Watercolor, Mixed Media, Collage
Angel Song by Leada Wood ©2015

Day 17 of the 30-30 Challenge

I thought I would continue the trend and do another mixed media today. Angel Song is collage, image transfer, and acrylic paint. I usually start a series of 10 or 12 at once and continue on from there...some make it to the finish lines and some don't. I can always gesso over the surface or just add more layers until I like it...and that is one of the beauties of mixed media and you cannot get the look any other way.

The last one is from Canada, the only one so far out of the USA. I love the way she recycles...how did she know I just saw Paul McCartney in October! All of these lovely ladies created wonderful works of art through recycling and using their imaginations. It was such fun watching the mailbox and squealing with glee when a postcard was found inside. As much as I like emails there is nothing quite like getting real mail...especially hand crafted ones just for you! Have a wonderful weekend!
