Artist Of Texas Show, by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Happy Fall Y'all !  I am so excited to have three of my paintings juried into the annual Artist of Texas fall show, "Open Spaces".  Living in the Wild West I enjoy observing all God' s creatures big and small and that inspires me to capture them in my paintings.

Some critters we don't see as much as we use too, like the Jack Rabbit. They use to roam the range everywhere, maybe it's getting too crowded and they have moved on. Whatever the reason I still love to paint them and get really excited when I spot one of the long eared fellows!
"A Good Scratch" is watercolor on archival paper and won an honorable mention in the Art League of West Texas Foundation's Spring show this year.

We have Hummers darting around our yard from early spring to October when they make their long journey to warmer climates. They especially love the Red Salvia bushes and the Canna Lillies in the garden. Inspiration is all around when you can "see" and look with "artists eyes".

Seeing a Scissored Tailed Flycatcher is a sure sign of spring in West Texas. I try to hold off planting my garden until I see they are back and the mesquites are out. They are quite aggressive and sometimes you will see two of them picking on a hawk or bigger big bird,  maybe their idea of fun.

They like to spend their winters in Mexico along with the Hummingbirds and a lot of other birds. Who wouldn't love a nice tropical climate while the cold north winds blow.

The "Open Spaces" exhibition will run from September 13th until October 22nd. The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center is a beautiful gallery and the drive is certainly worth doing to see all the exceptional art. The reception is Setember 17th and I plan on being there so stop by and say howdy!

When Your Smilin' by Leada Wood

When Your Smilin' by Leada Wood ©

I love Louis Armstrong's music! I painted this fun little painting for an upcoming show at the Heritage Museum in Big Spring, Texas in September. This painting is 8x8 on canvas done with liquid acrylics. It makes me smile and think of the song
" When your smilin', the whole world smiles with you" by Louis Armstrong.
I hope she brought a smile your way today!
This one is for sale....interested....just contact me!

Feed The Birds by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

This was fun mixing media with my watercolor, I will definitely continue playing around with this. Funny how a ghost bird appeared behind the one in her lap...hmmm...also looks like there is part of another one. That is what makes experimenting so interesting...you never know what is going to turn up OR if it will work out!  I did enjoy the way this background turned out...kind of moody and mysterious. Oh as I was taking the painting off the gator board I ripped it! AHHHHH! Used a different paper, not my usual Arches. Will use the rest of that paper for my students or collage, live and learn...

Well I can say one thing...this background has mystery! I have charged color wet into wet into her flesh and added a blue apron. Progess is being made!

Here we go again! This time I added a layer of Ultramarine blue and flow release.  Before I did that I used a pencil and drew into the other layers and wrote some things to give it a little mystery. Oh yeah there was some alcohol dribbled here and there and I used my brush handle while the other layers were wet and did some drawing. See I am just having fun with this! No worries. I always have a problem with backgrounds so that is why I decided to find another way of doing them. You never know until you try. Stay tuned to see if I can pull it off or if  I recycle.

Hmm, things have changed! I painted with gesso around the focal point and  when dry I painted with quin gold and added flow release to it. When that dried I added quin red and more flow release and turned it sideways so that is would flow.  Well anyway it is getting more interesting.....what do you think?

I started laying in watercolor but am not happy with the way things are going. Think I will have fun with this one, even if I ruin it I still have my drawing if things go bad, I can start over and use this paper for a collage painting.

When I was in New Orleans at Jackson Square I saw this lady  having lunch and sharing it with her pigeon friends. This little bird just hopped up on her lap to help himself to more. Luckily I had my camera with me, as always, so I captured the momemt. This is the drawing I did from the photo. I only drew the lady and the bird as they were what sparked my imagination. So this is the beginning of another painting....stay tuned!

15X22 Watercolor on Arches paper. This ole crow may bite off more than he has bargained for, or maybe he is just trying to spice things up!  We all need a little spice in our life to keep us lively. Hope your day is full of life's energy!

Love Birds

Love Birds (c) 2010 by Leada Wood All Rights Reserved
This is an 8X10 commission I did for a guy. It was painted on arches paper. Really sweet story of the couple, he gave it to his girlfriend for her birthday. How thoughtful and romantic is that!     SOLD
