Why Make Art? By Leada Wood, Texas Artist

I have been busy sketching in my sketchbook these days because I am enrolled in Sketchbook Skool, along with 4500 other artists around the world! It is amazing! We have master artists instructing us and encouraging us along the way. Technology is amazing when used for good purposes.

Danny Gregory is one of the instructors and he has raised lots of questions and given some very profound answers.  One that really got my attention was with all the technology was, why make art? If you can copy and past images and compress them on a computer and make art, why pick up pen or brush and create?

Here is what Danny said:

"So if, in one split second and with no real experience or skill, you can use the phone in your pocket to make an image that is technically superior and precise to anything you can make with pencil, why make art at all anymore?

That’s a question people have been asking themselves for almost two centuries. And the answer that Manet and Monet and Seurat and Cezanne and Van Gogh and the rest of the gang came up with over a hundred years ago is that the purpose of art is no longer to reproduce physical reality, it’s to convey how we feel about it. To capture the human condition, the way we see the world through the veils of subjectivity, experience, emotion, history and all the rest of the stuff that make us who we are.

This is something we have to think about when we draw.  Stop assessing your work based on how close it is to “reality”. Don’t bother posting a snapshot of your dog next to the drawing you did of it. Who cares if you are almost as good as that camera in your pocket. ‘Cause in fact, you’re not even close. That photo is a far better way to make that image. More efficient, more accurate.

But that image isn’t really what you want, is it? What you want is to capture your soul, your inner state, the love you feel for that dog. You want to make a picture of the inside of your mind.

Don’t worry about Xerox®ing reality with your sketchbook. Focus on capturing You instead.

So far nobody, in Silicon Valley or elsewhere, has come up with an app for that."

I think he pretty much sums it up don't you?  I know I create because I have to...it's who I am...it completes me.   Leada Wood

Black Cats, Fireworks and the 4th of July, by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

I grew up in rural Texas where firecrackers were a 4th of July tradition...guess they still are. I had two older brothers who used their allowance on black cats, as they made the most noise. I didn't much care for them as I was always kind of a scardy cat. Sparklers were daring enough for me...even those would send showers of sparks up my arm causing me to drop them in the dirt.

Firework watching is still a tradition with us, whether with family, friends or as a couple. We enjoy the show from a distance and let the experts do the work. I especially enjoy watching them to music, when I have a chance to be in the city on the 4th. The bigger and more colorful they are, the better!

As we enjoy the fireworks bursting in air let's remember the symbolism and be thankful for living in a free country. Take a moment to be grateful... and give thanks for all those who have served our country and are serving now. God Bless America!

Have a happy and safe holiday!

Fresh And Loose, by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

This is what was on my gator board today. I wanted to sketch a blue hydrangea with watercolor pencils and then paint as loosely as I could without overworking it and adding too much detail.

I use a possum palette from Cheap Joes, and it keeps my paints nice and juicy. Sometimes I do add a little water, but they never dry up and crack like some palettes I have used. There are individual cups with lids for your paints. I also enjoy the three separate mixing wells, and it has a carrying sleeve that the whole palette fits into. Makes traveling with that palette a whole lot easier. Sweet!

Here is a close up. I just let the color mingle and mix on the paper...and let the paint do its magic.

Here is the final version...fresh transparent watercolor. Still in love with them after all these years!
 Have a great weekend!

THE RAIN BRINGS, BY LEADA WOOD, TEXAS ARTIST

My Mom and Dad brought me this sign from one of their trips to Missouri, many years ago. It sure sums up how I feel about my garden! Here at Dragonfly farm in Texas we have been blessed with rain and cool, cloudy days...but I know the heat will be on eventually. I have been out capturing the moments with my camera so during the dog days of summer I can sit in my cool studio and paint. I wanted to share some of them with you.

Nothing as beautiful as our flag waving in the breeze. The symbol of our freedom, so many have given their lives for the privilege... and I am grateful.  This photo was from a trip to the hill country to see all the gorgeous wildflowers.

Feeling a little tropical around here with all the Hibiscus in full bloom.  Boot Man gave  them to me for Mother's Day! Flowers I can enjoy all summer long, they love the heat and bloom profusely.

The Petunias have loved the rain as well and are bigger than a bushel basket. The baby kittens love to hide under them.

The Herbs and garden have enjoyed the rain as well. You can see the garden has been calling me and taking my time away from painting and blogging...ah well, it's LIFE! I have been enjoying the time in the garden, while it is cool enough to do so. These photos are of some of my Herbs, Sage, Basil, and Dill. I grow others as well.

The Caterpillars have been plentiful on the Fennel...I grow it just for them. In turn I have lots of beautiful butterflies. As you can see from the photo they get pretty big!

Spring on Dragonfly Farm always brings baby kittens, one of my favorite things! I hope you have enjoyed my little tour of the farm and a peek into my life. Now you know what I have been up to...just in case you wondered. Have a wonderful week!

PURPLE IRIS BY LEADA WOOD, TEXAS ARTIST

PURPLE IRIS BY LEADA WOOD

I was reading an article by Kathie George on batik watercolors. Although I have been doing batik watercolor for a long time her technique was a little different from mine so I thought I would give it a go. I used my mixture of batik wax instead of paraffin like she suggested.  I did enjoy using brushes instead of the batik tools I normally use.  I enjoy the feel and the looseness it gives to the painting. The scariest part of all, in both techniques is at the end when you wad your rice paper into a ball. Sometimes holes occur so one must proceed with caution and practice. I also have done batik  with  acrylic paint and that's another whole ball of wax!
Have a great weekend!

These two hound dawgs are off for a Sunday drive with their master. This painting was especially fun to create as I had two entertaining subjects. Easy Riders is an original transparent watercolor on archival paper and is 9x11 unmatted. These dawgs are looking for a home!

Texas Tulips by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Texas Tulips by Leada Wood copyright 2014

With all the whacky weather we have had this year and the long cold winter my tulips did not bloom until mid April.I took photos and have finally gotten around to painting them. I tried a different technique using acrylics paints on canvas. I painted the entire canvas a mid tone pink and then started painting my lights and darks. It was new to me anyway! I really enjoyed painting this way and will continue to play around with it.  Texas Tulips is 5x7 on canvas.

Happy Easter! by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Happy Easter!

I had big fun with my little grandson Saturday dying Easter eggs for the family hunt tomorrow. Usually there are more of us dying eggs but the others were busy with other things this year. It was really nice to spend one on one time and enjoy him. Maybe next year things will be back to normal...whatever that is! From our family to yours Happy Easter!
