"Sand Dollar", Coastal Paintings by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

"Sand Dollar"by Leada Wood©2016

Have you ever found a whole, white glistening sand dollar laying at your feet while walking on the beach? Finding a perfect sand dollar is one of life's little pleasures. Our family is easily entertained seeking sea treasures while strolling along jumping waves and dodging jellyfish. Even finding the broken pieces gives quite a thrill to young and old alike. It is amazing how some sand dollars continue to remain intact with the relentless pounding of the surf. Maybe a life lesson there...some are damaged and some are unharmed within the currents of tide and time.

"Happy Feet" is a mixed media collage created from hand painted papers. I just love painting the little birdies...real and imaginary. Happy Feet has bright cheerful colors that makes you smile just looking at him. This is one of my recent bird series created for the Caboose Watercolor show at Howard Collage. The reception is April 12th from 5:00 to 6:30, stop by and see the show, have some sips and snacks and say hi!

Day 25 of the 30-30 Challenge

This is Slim, a different kind of bird. You might remember the painting of "Slim, Shorty and Lulu Gone Wild" I did a while back in watercolor. It was the ONLY time I painted with watercolor on canvas.  I always wanted to paint them again so today was the day. Slim is painted with acrylics on an cradle board.

Dragonfly by Leada Wood©2015

Day 24 of the 30-30 challenge

It has been a good year for Dragonflies at our house...especially the rust colored ones. I love to watch them fly and dart around and I also am fond of painting them. This evening Bootman and I lay in the hammock and watched them swarm above the treetops. I have never seen so many at once...swirling around and around...magical.

Dragonfly is acrylic on canvas board.

"Spirit Dreams" by Leada Wood©2015

Day 21 of the 30-30 challenge

"Spirit Dreams" is an acrylic mixed media painting. I begin by writing words or verses onto the blank canvas board. Then I use Gelli Prints that I create for the figures. I collage them on to a canvas board which has many layers of paint and papers, some are just barely visible. Mixed Media is a process and I really like doing them. It is almost like a puzzle to get all the patterns, textures and colors unified into a painting...and you never know IF or how it will turn out...just like any other media.

I saw this on Bob Burridge's Bob Blast today.
"Collage is an intuitive process of concealing, revealing, adding and subtracting until the artist's goals and intentions emerge from the layers
of construction and paint. Using a variety of materials and techniques,
the artist invents in their "laboratory for creativity." Keeping with the
original history of college art, it's all about risk-taking, new ideas, intentions and inventions."

That pretty much sums it up.

Citron by Leada Wood, copyright 2015

Happy 2015 ! I am starting this new year with Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. This is my third time to participate. It is always an exciting event and stretches me to paint every day. I learned in the first challenge that painting small is the way to go. I hope you follow along and don't mind my post everyday as that is another challenge in itself! Thanks for dropping by!

Girls Just Wanna Have fun! by Leada Wood,Texas artist

I haven't run out of paper or canvas to paint on...but sometimes I get to looking at everyday objects and just decide they need a little jazzing up! That is exactly what is happening to my brush carrier. I started off by drawing on it and since it is canvas decided it needed some paint. One thing led  to another and out came the glitter glue and colored pens. I like it much better than the dingy canvas carrier!  No it's not a self portrait (smile) but it might be my inner artist coming out to play. I have the other side drawn as well and now I need to paint it. I know I probably should be working for galleries, workshops and shows but I wanted to do this one for me. Hope you enjoyed seeing my little creation!

There's A Song In The Air by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Day 4 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.

"There's A Song In The Air" is a 8x8 mixed media collage on paper using liquid acrylics. A mixed media collage is where you use found papers, paint, transparencies, image transfers and whatever else you want and layer them, making  them cohesive enough to make a painting. A mixture of various techniques goes into each one. I do enjoy doing these as they are creatively challenging, kind of like a puzzle.

"Moon Shadows" by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

Moon Shadows by Leada Wood©
Close up of Moon Shadows by Leada Wood©
This was started in Carol Nelson's workshop and has gone through many changes since then. I decided today what was needed to finish and here it is on my blog at last!  I started the same as in the previous post layering papers I had designed, then glazing. The flower is a new technique Carol taught in her workshop to paint our papers. After all the collaging I started laying in my lights and darks and putting the finishing touches on.

I love Moonflowers! My mom and grandmother always had them in their yards. They bloom at night and early in the morning. I haven't carried on the tradition as yet but I do see moonflowers in my future!

"Gardens Of The Sun" Contemporary Abstract Painting by Texas Artist Leada Wood

"Gardens Of The Sun" by Leada Wood ©

I just completed a workshop in Granbury with artist Carolyn Riegelman. There were about 20 artists creating abstract paintings...putting layer upon layer of paint on the canvas. There were so many wonderful and exciting paintings created last week, any gallery would have had a fantastic show!
I have heard so many people say of abstract painting, "Oh my 3 year old could do that". Well I am here to say there is more to it than meets the eye! No visual references only intuitive painting. I enjoy the texture and playing around with color and shapes...trying to bring my vision into reality. No it is NOT easy painting Abstracts and I think if you have doubts you should give it a try!
This painting is 24X24 on gallery wrapped canvas.

Wise Old Owl by Leada Wood

Wise Old Owl by Leada Wood©

In the Western world, owls are traditionally associated with wisdom and knowledge and with the Greek goddess Athena. That's because Athena was a bird goddess and assumed often the form of an owl. Athena was not only the goddess of wisdom, but was also the goddess of arts and skills.

Although fun to look at the symbolism and pagan meanings, we must remember that true knowledge and wisdom comes only from our Creator.

I wish you a new year filled with joy, health and wisdom! May you be surrounded by family, friends and loved ones...nurturing each other...giving of your selves. I hope your new year is inspirational and creative...but most of all wonderful.

Thanks for following along this year on my creative journey...I hope you enjoyed it and will continue on this adventure with me!  May God bless you abundtly!

                                                                   Wise Old Owl
Like the Solomon of fowl
Sat a wise old owl
Perched in a Sycamore tree,
While the moonlight glimmered
And the starlight shimmered,
These words he spoke to me:

"I guess you've heard
I'm a wise old bird,
And if wisdom you would find...
Always look for the best
And your life will be blest,
To all others' faults be blind.

"In this life, I know
You will find it so
That if you think kindly of others,
You'll soon find that it's true
They'll think kindly of you...
Praise your sisters and your brothers!"

You may think me a fool -
Owls don't talk, as a rule,
But in solemn tone he said:
"Don't be quick to enact
Words you'll wish to retract,
Dwell upon the good instead!"

Though I hate to admit it,
I could see, once I did it,
What that wise owl said was true.
Your faults I'll overlook
'Cause it says in The Book
What you sow comes back to you!
Now, if you will agree
With what he said to me,
Then my faults you will ignore...
Like that sage bird said
We'll both come out ahead
If we judge less, and praise more!

Time Is Like A Circus by Leada Wood, Artist Of Texas

Time Is A Circus by Leada Wood

This painting is 12x12  acrylic on canvas. There is a lot of symbolism going on within the painting.  The little person standing with her hands on her hips is painted from clock keys that belonged to my dad. I combined three different clock keys and added little features to make it look like a little person.  My dad was a clock repairman and jeweler and could fix anything! The little person represents me. I used various clock parts and pieces around the painting. My mom collected elephants so that represents her and the two monkeys represent my brothers, these are also animals you see in a circus. This painting represents time, and how there is never enough of it...it just goes so fast! I found a quote that I liked, don't know who wrote it but it goes like this:
Time is like a circus always packing up and moving away.
I hope you enjoyed my little take on time.

This is my painting for Inspiration Avenue's weekly challenge Keys.
Be sure to check out Inspiration Avenue's weekly challenge Keys to see all the great art work.

A Different Pear by Leada Wood© Artist Of Texas

A Different Pear by Leada Wood©
To purchase this painting click here: http://www.leadawood.com/

Autumn is all about the harvest...a time to slow down...to reflect...a time of changes. I love Autumn! The cool crisp air in the mornings, the leaves turning vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds. Pumpkins and gourds appear at the local market, and if you are very fortunate you live close to where they have apple orchards and pumpkin patches and can go there and enjoy the fruits of the harvest. My mom always had pears in the autumn and we were blessed to get her pear preserves that she made.  I still love pears, I especially like to paint them!
This is for Inspiration Avenues weekly challenge, Autumn.

Dancing Dragonflies

Dancing Dragonflies ©Leada Wood
Sold

This is a 11x14 liquid acrylic on illustration board, using a splatter technique then painting negatively around the dragonflies, leaving only the underpainting showing. I added a little detail in black to make them pop.  This is always a fun way to begin a painting because you never know where you will end up. This painting now lives with a couple in Lubbock, hope they are happy together!
