30 Paintings In 30 Days By Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Leada Wood, Watercolor, Mixed Media, Watercolor

"Spartan" by Leada Wood ©2015

Day 29 of the 30-30 challenge

I always thought my granddaughters would be ballerinas and some of them were for a season or two...but something happened and some became Warrior Women...Martial Arts caught their interest. They are earning their belts and their eyes are on the prize...the black belt.

I used a lot of symbolism in this painting. The symbol in the corner is Kanji for believe. The color red is symbolic for speed, strength, power, the golden hues represent energy and balance, black is symbolic for power and Spartan means disciplined, brave, undaunted. I think that pretty much sums up my little Warrior Women.

30 Paintings In 30 Days by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Leada Wood, Watercolor, Mixed Media, Collage

"Spirit Dreams" by Leada Wood©2015

Day 21 of the 30-30 challenge

"Spirit Dreams" is an acrylic mixed media painting. I begin by writing words or verses onto the blank canvas board. Then I use Gelli Prints that I create for the figures. I collage them on to a canvas board which has many layers of paint and papers, some are just barely visible. Mixed Media is a process and I really like doing them. It is almost like a puzzle to get all the patterns, textures and colors unified into a painting...and you never know IF or how it will turn out...just like any other media.

I saw this on Bob Burridge's Bob Blast today.
"Collage is an intuitive process of concealing, revealing, adding and subtracting until the artist's goals and intentions emerge from the layers
of construction and paint. Using a variety of materials and techniques,
the artist invents in their "laboratory for creativity." Keeping with the
original history of college art, it's all about risk-taking, new ideas, intentions and inventions."

That pretty much sums it up.

More Gelli Prints by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

I was honored to do a Demo on Gelli Printing for the Big Spring Art Association this past Tuesday evening. I thought I would share some of my finished prints with you. It is such a fun process and the prints can be used in so many ways. You also can print on various surfaces and obtain excellent results.

Of course my studio is usually a wreck during the printing process! When I print it is usually a days work and I have piles of Prints. I then separate them into three piles... a more to go pile, an almost there pile and that's a wrap pile and sometimes one or two find their way into the trash pile. I find adding lots of layers usually makes the most interesting papers

I use my hand made stamps for the images or sometimes I paint over the Gelli Print and of course they are always great for collage. Making stamps is another thing that is fun to do. There are all kinds of ways to make stamps but that is another post.

This little elephant was made into a card...waiting for the right person to send it to. I love to get real mail, don't you? Especially cards handmade with love!

A little birdie told me to make another card. I sometimes add little embellishments along with the Gellies.

You never know how your Gellies will turn out. This one has a little metallic paint on it as well. I enjoy using bight color combinations. That's the way I roll.

Even when you use similar stamps and colors no two Gellies will ever be the same. That is one of the fascinating things about Gelli Printing...each print is unique and cannot be duplicated exactly.

I love the rich colors and interesting textures you can create. It's so much fun...kind of like making mud pies when I was a kid.

Bee kind to one another and have a wonderful, relaxing weekend! Thanks for stopping by!

Day Twenty Six-30-30 Challenge By Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Cherry Blossom, copyright 2015 Leada Wood

Switching gears and doing some mixed media, layers of paint, paper and more paint. It is good to escape reality sometimes and do a little day dreaming. Artist sometimes live in the world they imagine.

I like the tee shirt with the saying: "I am an ARTIST that means I live in a crazy fantasy world with unrealistic expectations. Thank you for understanding." Hmmm...I may have to get one of those.

Only four more days to go with this challenge and I won't have to push and juggle my life so hard. A little more leisurely pace. I welcome it...although it has been fun to see if I could do it and keep up with my real life. I thank you dear readers for your comments and support!

You can see all the artist in the challenge here: www.lesliesaeta.blogspot.com

Girls Just Wanna Have fun! by Leada Wood,Texas artist

I haven't run out of paper or canvas to paint on...but sometimes I get to looking at everyday objects and just decide they need a little jazzing up! That is exactly what is happening to my brush carrier. I started off by drawing on it and since it is canvas decided it needed some paint. One thing led  to another and out came the glitter glue and colored pens. I like it much better than the dingy canvas carrier!  No it's not a self portrait (smile) but it might be my inner artist coming out to play. I have the other side drawn as well and now I need to paint it. I know I probably should be working for galleries, workshops and shows but I wanted to do this one for me. Hope you enjoyed seeing my little creation!

Moonlight On The Mesa by Leada Wood

I have wanted to do hot wax encaustics for a long time. I don't have the proper ventilation in my studio so I haven't tried it yet. I have been experimenting around with faux encaustics though and am liking the results. You use acrylic paint instead of oil and different mediums.

I usually don't like doing landscapes as I did so many of them as a beginning painter many years ago. But I can see a new more interesting way to do them now through encaustics and collage.

I started the process using pages from an old book. I rescued it from the trash and repurposed it.  This is a mixed media painting. I hope you can see the many layers on the blog as that is what makes it so interesting.

Image Is Everything by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Day 5 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days. It is quiet a challenge to keep on going...to do a painting a day is a real stretch! It's kind of like exercise, I know it's good for me and it gives me a good feeling when I finish. I am keeping my brushes wet!

This is a 9x12 mixed media collage on watercolor paper.

Texas Traditions by Leada Wood, Contemporary Texas Artist

Texas Traditions Copyrighted 2013 by Leada Wood All Rights Reserved
DO NOT COPY!
I love to see our state flag waving in the breeze...red, white and blue with a lone star. It is one of the most recognized flags of any state flag in the United States, and it has been flying over Texas for well over 175 years.

Each color in the flag has special meaning, the white stands for purity, the blue stands for loyalty and the red stands for bravery. The lone star has five points and they represent the characteristics of a good citizen, which are fortitude, loyalty, righteousness, prudence, and tolerance. The lone star represents All of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, State and Country. The lone star is seen as a symbol of Texas' independent spirit and gave us the nickname "The Lone Star State.

Boots are also a Texas tradition and have been worn by cowboys since the 1800's. Cowboy boots refer to a specific style of riding boot that have a slanted heel to keep the foot in the stirrup and a tall top to protect their lower leg while riding a horse.

Our family has been a part of the Texas tradition by selling cowboy boots for over 40 years. We don't just sell cowboys boots though...now they are for everyone! They come in a variey styles, colors, and leathers...some very exotic. I am proud to be a part of the Texas tradition. I guess that is why I enjoy painting cowboys and boots.

Peaceful Poppies by Leada Wood, Texas Artist

Peaceful Poppies by Leada Wood©

This Mixed Media  painting is 12x24 on illustration board and is available. I think this is one of my favorite color palettes. Rich, warm, vibrant earthy colors just make me feel good. I used modeling paste and some of my stencils to give this painting raised textures. I also sculpted around the poppies with a palette knife to give them a defined edge. It is always interesting to experiment and find a new way to interpret a subject. Sometimes they turn out like you imagine or they take you on a completely different path. Kind of like life isn't it...you just never know what to expect!

Dragon Fly Diptychs by Leada Wood©

Dragon Fly Diptych by Leada Wood©
I wanted you to see a little more of the texure and detail and then see them side by side.
Dragon Fly Diptychs by Leada Wood©

In the 15th Century, Nobles as well as bankers, merchants and other members of the middle class began to commission works of art now known as diptychs, which consisted of two panels hinged together that could be opened and closed like a book.
While occasionally secular in nature, the subject matter was usually religious and often included portraits of the people who owned the diptychs or in whose memory that were painted.
Most diptychs were small in scale intended for private contemplation; they either hung on a wall or stood resting open on a prayer desk. They were sometimes stored in a small wooden box or velvet pouch when not in use.

Modern artist have used the term in the title of works consisting of two paintings, not connected but intended to be hung close together as a pair.

These diptychs are 16x20 on canvas, using mixed media. There is a lot of texturing involved with this piece and some areas are in raised relief, with a little guilding going on. I used acrylic paints, texture mediums, oil pastels and paint pens to get the effects I was trying to acheive. The section the dragonflies are on has a crackled, stucco texture to give the appearance of age.
I enjoy using symbolisim in my art and leaving it up to the viewer to figure it all out.

O Happy Day by Leada Wood ©

O Happy Day by Leada Wood ©

This is a mixed media painting on canvas 12x12, with a two inch cradle. No need to frame as the painting goes around all sides. This painting has cheery colors and lots of interesting messages and layers of texture. The little sunflower is clay and sculpted by me! Of course I had to add my signature blings to complete the painting. This cheerful painting is for sale and would be uplifting everyday!

ARTifacts© Painting by Leada Wood Artist of Texas

Oneta Sanderson with her ARTifact© painting created for her by her daughter Leada Wood in honor of her 90th birthday.
ARTifact© painting by Leada Wood©

Yes, I did add a couple of more things to my mom's ARTifact painting. After looking at it for a while I decided I needed to add a photo of me and my brothers. I chose a heart format because she always kept us close to her heart and loved us unconditionally. I also added a photo of her brothers and sisters under my grandma and grandpa so the family circle was complete. She was very surprised and liked her painting! When I took her home after her party, she asked me to hang it on her wall and with great pleasure I did.
If you are new to my blog check the older posts to see the process of this painting.
Thanks for joining me in my journeys!

ARTifacts © Painting by Leada Wood Artist of Texas

The Watcher by Leada Wood © All Rights Reserved

Well I think I have completed this ARTifact painting for my mom's 90th birthday. I will have to look at it for the next few weeks, before I give it to her, to see if there is anything else to add. It's hard to see everything on there  because of the low resolution so I will tell you a little about the rest of the story. I added a little angel in the top left corner of the family registry to signify all the grandparents I didn't know, that hopefully are my guardian angels, watching over me. I added a heart by my grandparents picture, I didn't know my grandfather but I sure loved my grandmother. The little ornament by my mom's birthdate has rubies in it, her birthstone, also the verse, Who can find a virteous woman? Her worth is above rubies. The antique watch face by my dad at the top is to signify him, he was a watchmaker by trade. It also signifies the passage of time.
The verse on the right is from

The Watcher
She always leaned to watch for us
                                                        Anxious if we were late,
                                                        In winter by the window,
                                                          In summer by the gate.
And though we mocked her tenderly,
                                                      Who had such foolish care,
The long way home would seem more safe
                                                        Because she waited there.

I then added a cross to signify Christianty, next to my mom's favorite verse:
"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness" which just about sums up my mom's life.
I hope you have enjoyed taking this journey with me and seeing my thoughts as I created this ARTifact © Painting. I would be honored to do one for you or your loved one. Just contact me!

ARTifacts by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

ARTifacts by Leada Wood©

Thought you might like a little closer look at my work. It is kind of hard to see as I have to use such low resolutions. Progress is being made! Less than a month now so I need to keep busy!

If you are looking for a gift for an anniversary, birthday, a hard to buy for person or to commemorate a special occasion the ARTifact painting might just be what you are looking for.

ARTifacts by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

ARTifacts by Leada Wood©

I worked on my Mom's painting today at Studio Twenty. Still hot in Texas! I am so blessed to have a nice, cool space to nurture my creative muse.
I did a lot of tucking of the textures and added a fleur de lis and then added gold leaf to it. I decided I wanted to add a picture of my grandparents but I didn't want them to be too obivious, and I also wanted to still be able to read the Bible Registry behind them. I was looking in my Mom's old bible for some favorite verses to add and I found in the front of her bible where she had written, "Remember me with joy and laughter" and thought that was very appropriate for her so I added that above her birthdate. I am still looking for her favorite bible verses, may just have to ask her! This is a surprise for her so I will have to be crafty!

ARTifacts by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

ARTifacts by Leada Wood©

My Mom will be 90, July 13 so I wanted to do something meaningful in honor of her. I started this painting by laying textures in  and then to kill the white of the canvas I mixed a nice warm color and glazed the canvas. I used game pieces to spell out Mom's name and took my grandma's family bible and scanned the family registry and collaged it in the upper left. I call this way of working ARTifacts, because they come from the heart and have family history or artifacts incorparated into them.  I do  these paintings for my family and also commissions for other families. I enjoy working this way, using symbols, textures, found items and meaningful trinkets to tell the persons story.
